Sound Women arose out of a Natural Voice acapella singing course led by Sarah Harman in the early 1990s. The course was forced to fold – not enough takers – but we decided to carry on. Sarah was engaged as tutor and we forced our friends to come. They came, found (mostly) that they enjoyed it, and stayed.
Originally the group included men, but they faded away. A name for the group became necessary when we produced our first tape, in around 1995. Sound Women was born.
Since then we have learned hundreds of songs from all over the world, and from many centuries.
Sarah eventually moved on, and we have been led for some years now by Tracey Gummow.
Singing has improved all our lives, and we are inclined to break into song at any opportunity.
